March 2023 Newsletter message from our Stewartry U3A Chair

Hello and welcome
A very special welcome to our new members who have joined this year. I hope
that you enjoy everything that our u3a has to offer and in turn feel able to make
a contribution by offering your time and skills to maintain our vibrant
organisation.
It is most encouraging to see our u3a attracting new members. We need a flow
of new members to ensure a healthy future for our u3a, people who bring their
own skills and experiences which enriches the lives of our members. It is these
shared experiences which makes u3a such an enjoyable activity, whether it be
joining Groups, attending Members Meetings or venturing out on excursions or
events.
In this newsletter you will see reports on many of these activities. A number of
Groups are reporting on their experiences during the past month, demonstrating
the pleasure that they have in exploring the subjects that they are studying or
recreational sports they enjoy. A number of Groups are now able to accept
additional members, so if you fancy a new challenge in life, please see the list in
this newsletter. You will not be disappointed.
The four major excursions that we are running this year are proving to be
popular. The Wordsworth Tour still has a few seats available, but as it takes
place in less than 4 weeks, members need to purchase tickets at this month’s
Members Meeting or pay by BACS before the end of March. Members can also
pay for seats on the Floors Castle, Dumfries House, and Blackpool Illuminations
excursions at the Events Team table in the Hall after the March Members
Meeting on Tuesday 28 March.
The Events Team have also been very busy organising the Summer Concert
which is taking place on Saturday 3 June in Kirkcudbright. This gives all of us the
opportunity to dress-up and savour a special afternoon where we can enjoy fine
music and good company. More details are contained in this newsletter and
tickets can be purchased at the Events Team table in the Hall.
The talk at this month’s Members Meeting is on the topic of Smuggling in
Galloway. As Frances Wilkes explained “smuggling around Luce Bay justifies its
own book, whilst the Kirkcudbright story is equally complex but very different”
Please come to hear the story behind this covert business.
