April 2023 Newsletter message from our Chair

April 2023 Newsletter message from our Stewartry U3A Chair
The full newsletter is emailed to all members monthly.

Hello and welcome
The u3a is primarily about people. Our u3a is one of nearly 1,200 u3a’s in Britain, which collectively has over 400,000 members. As with any large organisation, the u3a movement has a certain amount of bureaucracy, but ultimately u3a is about people.

When I look at our Groups, attend our monthly Members Meetings, and enjoy our excursions and events, I see members enjoying each other’s company; exchanging thoughts, opinions and knowledge; enjoying new experiences; and fundamentality savouring life for what it has to offer. We are learning all the time and having fun.

In this edition of our newsletter you will read about some of our Groups enjoying all of these things, including trips out. You will also find a proposal for a new Group which offers a new perspective on a traditional idea. I encourage all members to join our Groups, both to widen your knowledge and understanding, and also bring new ideas to the Groups. As I have said before, come with an open mind and it is amazing what you can learn.

Details of our Summer Concert on 3 June are now publicised and tickets are available to buy. This will be a very pleasant afternoon, giving members and friends an opportunity to relax, dress for summer, enjoy the music, and mix socially.

We have just completed our first major excursion of the year when we enjoyed our journey to the Lake District on the Wordsworth Tour (a report will be in the next Newsletter) Everyone said it was a beautiful experience. Details of our next three major excursions are in this Newsletter, with tickets available to book at the Events Team table in the Hall at our Members Meeting next Tuesday.

Our talk this month at our Members Meeting is an update on the Galloway Hoard by Andrew Nicholson, Archaeologist for D&G Council. Andrew has seen this discovery unfold over the past few years and it will be interesting to hear about our current understanding.

I hope that you can see that all of this is about you, the member. As I have said, u3a is about people, so please come along to our Members Meeting, enjoy listening to our Speaker and have a chat afterwards and find out what is happening.

I look forward to seeing you at our Members Meeting on Tuesday 25 April at 2pm. and please join us for refreshments and a chat in the Hall afterwards.
