Iain Howie on behalf of the British Heart Foundation gave a select group of Stewartry U3A members a most interesting talk about defibrillators in the Stewartry. A defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest. There have been several initiatives to install them around the area (despite a controversial suggestion by our local Health Board that the kits should not be funded).
Mr Howie told of examples where local people’s lives had been saved including John McFarlane of Kirkcudbright whose life was saved by staff from the Masonic Arms using their defibrillator.
Following his demonstration of CPR and defibrillator use, gallant volunteers practiced on the model Annie and practiced the recovery position.
For a current map and list of local defibrillators go to the Stewartry Community Safety Forum website http://www.stewartrycommunitysafetyforum.com/
If there isn’t one near you and you think there should be contact the Safety Forum or Stewartry U3A.
