January 2023 Newsletter message from our Stewartry U3A Chair

Happy New Year to you.
The start of a new year is usually full of hope and anticipation. We make new resolutions and plan for new adventures, although sometimes we just hope that what we enjoy will continue. Within our u3a we plan to offer new things to enjoy, whilst continuing to offer the things that you already appreciate.
The national u3a slogan is “learn, laugh, live” and I think that our u3a delivers on these aims. As your new Chairman I would like to add to these aims by asking all members to come to our Monthly Members Meetings, Groups, Events and Excursions “with an open mind” meaning that you have a curiosity about what is being organised on your behalf and are willing to participate in these new experiences.
I hope that you will give us the opportunity to demonstrate this at our Members Meeting on Tuesday 24 January. At this meeting you will be the first to hear news about a very special event that we are planning to hold in the Spring. Members who attend will also be the first to hear about four major excursions that will be offered this year, each excursion offering a different learning experience, whilst being very enjoyable and fun.
Our guest speaker at this meeting is Graham Finch who will talk about ‘Alf Webster – Scotland’s Lost Genius – an exploration of the short but spectacular life of one of Scotland’s finest artists.’ Whether or not you have an interest in stained glass or even art generally, this talk will be a fascinating glimpse into the life and work of this artist whose life was tragically cut short. After the speaker please come and join us for refreshments, where you can meet and chat with other members, and say hello to me if you wish. I would love to hear your thoughts on our u3a.
This newsletter also details how some of our Groups have been enjoying themselves during the past two months and also contains details about what they have planned. New Groups are also being formed and planned, details of which will be available at the Members Meeting and on the website. Any member wishing to discuss the formation of a new Group should contact Magnus Johnson, our Groups Coordinator.
